Full Version: Financial Aid Question
Ask Buffalo State > Prospective and Accepted Students > Financial aid

Hello,

I have a question regarding the purchasing of books for classes. At my previous institution we had something called a Campus Spending Account, in which every semester we put how ever much money on it to afford things like books. Does Buffalo State have an equivalent to this? I was just curious if I had to be money out of pocket for my books, or if it's covered by my financial aid package?

Thanks,

Raymond

They do, its called a book deferment. The only way you can do this is if you have extra money from financial aid. For example if you received $10,000 in financial aid for the fall semester and your bill only comes to $9000, you have $1000 extra, that you would normally get in a refund check. You can take a portion of that and put it in a book store account so you can buy your textbooks. There is a sheet that you will have to fill out in person at the student accounts office for the deferment. They usually let you fill it out a week or two before classes start. Also the money you put in the book store account stays there so if you dont use it all up by the end of the spring semester you lose it.

The college does have a book deferment process for the fall and spring semesters. You can apply approximately 2 to 3 weeks prior to the start of classes. To receive the deferment, you must have financial aid that will cover your bill for the semester as well as a book deferment. You decide on the amount you wish to have sent to the bookstore to use as your deferement until your financial aid is received and the bookstore is repaid. Any leftover monies from the fall can be used in the spring and you have until 7/15 to spend all unused funds. We encourage all students to apply for the deferment early as there is a 2-3 day processing time with the bookstore. Also, the last day to request the deferment is the last day of schedule adjustment for each semester. The deferments can be obtained from either the student account office or the financial aid office. Have a nice summer!
