Full Version: Your Computer and Our Network - ResNet
Ask Buffalo State > Prospective and Accepted Students > Living on campus
Residence Life IT
Each semester, we prepare a bunch of information regarding your responsibilities for getting your computers ready to connect to our network. I figured it would be a good idea to post them here too, in case you all wanted to get a head start or had any questions.

Here's link to ResNet web site. If you have questions, please post them in a new thread (unless there's one that's related to your question already).

I had some trouble connecting but once I logged onto the computers in the library, my login to the network in my room was accepted too.

I use AVG Free Edition and it works well for me. Do I have to download McAfee and use it in order to get on the network when I get back to school? Or can I keep my current Anti-Virus software with no problem? I'm fine with either, I just want to know before I get there.
csihelp
They said u can use whatever u want as long as there is an anti-virus on ur system

The Dell version of McAfee is not telling people their subscriptions are out-of-date or inactive, and it's not properly updating. All students with Dell Security Center should UNINSTALL this completely and install the Buffalo State version of McAfee.

After uninstalling the Dell version, restart and Cisco Clean Access will automatically redirect you to the download page for the Buffalo State McAfee installer.

So we are supposed to download this stuff at home so that way when we get to the school we hook our computer up and it should be all set to go? Also if you have a problem with any of this stuff who do you go to see about it?
djking60
whats up ppl im a freshman and just moving in, i was wondering if i already have mcaffee do i need this DL or am i set ???? lemme know thanks cool.gif
WillieBounce
You don't really need to download anything except for Clean Access Agent. If your computer doesn't meet the requirements of the network they will give you a certain amount of time to fix whatever problems on your computer need to be fixed (i.e. anti virus updates, windows updates, etc.) before they kick you off the network..every 30 mins.

I tried to install McAffe, but Vista said this version of Mcaffee VirusScan8 wasn't suppoted by Vista, dry.gif and would cause problems with computer startup blink.gif . I didn't complete the installation due to this conflict.

Any help resolving this issue would be appreiciated!

you may want to call reslife or e-mail the computer tech guy directly and he may be able to help out... cause i'm not sure how much reslife checks these boards
Jesse
Guess they don't check the board OR thier e-mail, still no response!

Any suggestions? I already deleted the trial version of Norton on the computer, as directed, to load McAffee ARRGH!

Have to try one of the freebie programs for now.
mathgeni
if they haven't checked e-mail or the boards i would say call them... other than that i don't know of anything else to do
Jesse
Called Residence Life office, they said that the know McAffee is not compatible to Vista. They recommended downloading and usig AVG Free Edition and using that with Vista.
sara61

I'm in the same boat as you. I just deleted my trial version of Norton to load McAffee too. I'm pissed off. Grr. now I have to find something that'll work until I can get back home and get Norton again.

AVG Free works well. Norton and McAfee are products which are generally more supported by corporations or other groups, which is probably why they recommend them. They are certainly not better than AVG, some say worse. The best virus protection anyways seems to be to keep your system up to date with patches for your OS, and not opening email attachments, downloaded files, etc, that you are not 100% trusting of the source.

If you need the McAfee for vista just email resnet@buffalostate.edu. i will send you the link so you can download it. This information is also on the resnet web site (McAfee download page), and the information is there since the early august. AVG will also work, you can use either one of them for vista.

I just have a quick problem, well I hope its quick anyways.

I've been online with a brand new computer for 2 weeks now and last night I was booted out of cisco. When I tried to log back into it I got a message saying "SSL certificate REV failed [12057]". I've never received this message before and don't know what to do about it to get the system to log me back in. I'll be taking the computer into resnet as soon as I can, but I was hoping that in the meantime there was someone out there who could help me out on this board.

Thank you,
Nikki

Did you update any security features or change your browser?

To fix this problem, go into internet explorer > go to tools (hit alt if you do not have the File/edit/view/etc commands) > go to internet options > go to advanced (tab at the top) > scroll down to security > click off check for server certificate revocation > hit apply > close internet explorer > exit cisco completely > reboot cisco and log in.

Let me know if there's any other problems or if that fix didn't work.

Sometimes just restarting your computer will work, or waiting until the morning. I've seen that error quite a few times, most recently when I had my computer on campus last week, I just restarted and I was fine because it automatically logged me back in.

How, do I get the Mcafee?

I understand we need a length of CAT-5 cable to hook our computers to the wall data port.
What length of CAT-5 cable would be sufficient?

I have McAfee already on my computer, it says its up to date and everything and that there's no problem but everytime i try to log in on to the internet with my Dell it keeps stopping me saying that an anti-virus program is required to be installed on your system to access BSC's network. I don't understand because I have the McAfee Total Protection so shouldn't I be fine. PLEASE HELP!!!!
JeremyJ

Yeah I did but it still doesn't allow me on and keeps telling that I don't have an anti-virus program installed. So I'm a little puzzled by it and don't know what to do.
JeremyJ
Thats weird. I would make sure macafee is updated. If that doesnt work email reslife, i think theyre in charge of that.
