The Nintendo DS can now connect to the internet, Manny, try going to the library to connect, it works for the PSP.
John
you know what would really rule...
a connection that doesnt drop people from games.
cobbs87
can we connect yet?

I posted a reply a little over a week ago showing how some games that will let you choose what port it will run off of, will work when set to port 5190. I knew this port worked because my aim would let me directly connect.
Only downside to this is that we need to turn off almost all firewalls. especially windows firewall.
its a risk. but i was playing warcraft last night.
too bad the use of D++ bs lags you like a mother.
and shareaza... i think we need to rid the system of this crap.
cobbs87
oooooh...I meant Ps2/XBox. Thats all I care about.

i need xbox live.. i am payin for the subscription.

just renewed for what?
oh yeah... nothing.

Can you guys also get Guild Wars to work, I got when i went home but i left my computer there so I'm not sure if it works as of yet.
John
Guildwars = mmorpg
bsc = internet that doesnt like mmorpg
bsc /= mmorpg
= you unhappy

i doubt we have the bandwith for that game to even be fun though,
id wait for the internet budget to be increased...
we kinda get the shaft for connection ping...
I havent really figured out why...
aside maybe heavy downloads and spyware...
but i dont know how that can kill mine or your connection.

In Mr. Chase's defence, i did see signs up for an
"Internet litteracy" meeting in porter earlier in november, i had class during it so i dunno how many people showed up, but i dont know if it really worked so well.
I understand that Shareaza seems to be the file sharing program of choice, and DC++ (something like that). I understand thats all network bandwith, but cant that slow us down too?
I know torrents dont work so i eliminated that idea.

So I really think the only way we can win at this point is wait for a bandwith upgrade, and hopefully a way to block out DC++ and Shareaza, and more attempts to delete this Spyware bs off the less pc educated students' pc's.
KunoCorp
If getting rid of everyone's spyware would increase our bandwidth and eventually lead to a solution for our gaming woes, I would personally go to every students room and clean their computers.
SWATsnip3r
DC++ is internal Bandwidth therefore it does not effect the regualr internet because it is an on campus only server. The problem lies with the packet shaper and ignorant and niave computer users. P2P programs really dont work so dont use them!
Residence Life IT
Spyware is much less of a problem than P2P, some of which must work - we are still getting a few DMCA notices that I have to serve to students each week.

This week we've been adding Xbox and PS2 functionality. You may see improvements or changes in online behavior. If you see changes but still cannot get it to work, please feel free to email me directly and BE SPECIFIC about what kind of errors you receive.

granted its internal bandwith, but you cant tell me it isnt slowing the connection to the server at all.

i guarantee it would help,
but like IT said,
not gonna make xb work
and its not going to be the end all be all of internet needs.
SWATsnip3r
not neccarily because if you free up more bandwidth that spyware/P2P software is using, that addtitional bandwidth could be used for the ports that PS2 or XB use.

In any case, i dont think that there is a way to clean up everyone's computers on campus, unless the school requires it using CAA, or provides a free firewall or spyware detecting program such as spybot or webroot.
buffstatecis2006
Spyware is indeed a MAJOR factor of bandwidth hogging. Online gaming does require a constant stream but its so minimal that it wouldn't bog down the network unless the majority of users are playing on the network.

This is the reason why online gaming can still be playable speeds on low end connections such as dial up or ISDN. There is obviously not a lot of bandwidth in these situations.

The major problem on this network is the lack of spyware checking through CCA. I've seen my share of students who aren't exactly smart enough to want to keep their computers clean. That is just irresponsible behavior.

Tip: Take your computer to a lab and use that and it will prove that the college has more than enough bandwidth to play online games.

...did you just tell me to take my pc to a computer lab to play games?
KunoCorp
Ddue, it's the same old problem, in Topy Hawk American Wasteland. I can connect to the master server but the only thiings that can be done there is downloading skateparks or other player made things. To play the actual game it would have to connect to a gamespy server. Master Server------>Gamespy Server
(can connect) (cannot connect) sad.gif
good hustle though. If you would like to work closer with a PS2, I'm available, now and next semester.
cobbs87
Yeah I can't even get close to connecting to EA sports server. It gets to the authenticating DNAS screen then fails. It gives me error message (-610). I'm not sure where but online you can find a list of what these messages mean. If I find the link I will post it.
cobbs87
Found it http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstatio...essage.id=57045

"-610 NET_SSL An SSL session error occured. "DNAS Error (-610) A network error has occurred." Please double-check your network connection and/or network configuration."

Thats all we got from it.

well that is gonna be a fun trick for IT to work on over the break...
poor guy has his work cut out for em on this one.

I'm just the messenger for the most part - it's the network manager that has to actually do the majority of the work. It's actually much easier for us to work on these issues during breaks.
KunoCorp
Cool, here's hoping our Playstations and XboX's are up and running when we get back from break. That's my christmas wish...Happy Holidays everyone!
John
any update on ps2 and xbox live?

or even mmo rpgs?
KunoCorp
This is the biggest topic on this forum. Let's keep it up there, I really hope everything is fixed but I think we'd have to wait till school starts, because I dont think the Ressnet dude is even there. oh and one more thing, the nintendo ds is now online enabled. it'd be great if we could somehow get the network to allow the ds. the name is Nintendo WFC.
csihelp
The resnet people are here. I called them on the 11th when I got here to ask them how to hook up my laptop to internet access.
cobbs87
so...haven't tested it but does anyone know if online works for ps2?
SWATsnip3r
anyone try out BF2? If so how is the lag?
cobbs87
Hey I tried online for ps2 and xbox and naturally it doesn't work. I guess it would be time to give up on that. It was nice over break. But if its not working by now...
Residence Life IT
Like I've said in the past, we are waiting for the new Packetshaper to arrive and after that most of these issues should be resolved. It has been ordered and I'll let you know as soon as we install it.
Nakrah
I sent a request to the email address listed on the bandwidth site for ventrilo. The default port for most servers is 3784. My host happens to use port 3839. I asked them if I would be able to change ports. They said this is not an issue, but I'd like to know what ports you have open and availible for a VoIP program?

EDIT: Disregard this post as I read in another thread that the Ventrilo blocking is not due to ports but traffic classification.

I would like to note that Ventrilo uses ~4KB/s per active stream. On average this bandwidth required would be no more than average web browsing.
Residence Life IT
We don't block any ports. Traffic is passed or blocked based on its type.
Nakrah
ETA on a decision about Ventrillo?

Its sort of time sensitive because I have to sit out guild events because of my lack of Voice communication.

It also is a bummer since it was a large part of my communication with friends back home.

I sent an email earlier this week and the response I got was this.

To: <randsw98@mail.buffalostate.edu> Date: Tue, 17 Jan 2006 16:28:59 -0500
Subject: RE: Shaper: Ventrilo
From: "Chase, Douglas" <CHASEDJ@BuffaloState.edu>

I have forwarded your message to the Networking group and they will
review it.
Residence Life IT
I sent that message, and it was the truth. If you read the thread, you would notice that we are waiting for a new Packetshaper appliance and are not able to make these changes until that device has been installed.

Again, this is not a "decision" as we have been asked about Ventrilo in the past and it is on the list of services we plan to enable as soon as we can.
Nakrah
Ok, excuse my misunderstanding of the process. Just from what I had read, and from your email it seemed as if it was a decision that needed to be made on whether the program was worthy of bandwidth.

I did read the part about getting in a new Packetshaper appliance. The way that thread went, and that date it was posted (I believe from last semester) I was under the impression that the current Packetshaper was the new appliance.

Again. If I have come across as rude or anything in these threads thats not how I meant to be. I will admit I am slightly impatient as VoIP was a big part of the daily routine and its one more thing that I've had to adjust to living on campus.

Keep up the good work! and keep up posted on that new equipment!
Residence Life IT
Thanks Nakrah! I want to get this stuff working for you guys, really. There's just a lot of steps involved.
John
so i guess the big question is...
how longs the shipping taking??
Nakrah
/sigh....

As if Vent wasnt bad enough all my friends dropped WOW, switched over to Square-Enix's Playonline-Final Fantasy XI.... Which as you might suspect doesn't work. sad.gif

Is the new shaper expected this semester?
cobbs87
so does a packet shaper always take roughly a semester to ship?
Nakrah
I'd say asking for an ETA and letting you know what still isn't working is hardly giving you a hard time. You said it was ordered on the 19th. So thats less than 14 days totally understandable that it hasnt arrived yet. However, someone should have a general idea of when it may arrive/be installed.

It was also this date that you posted a message that no changes had been made in the rules of packet shaper since last semester.

I think everyone, student and staff side is extremely frustrated with the situation as it has been going on since the begining of last semester and on October 4th you posted that you, and other universities were working with the manufacturer to create a better rule set.

Have the other schools that use our packetshaper (SUNY Geneseo for uses a packetshaper system) been able to get their networks up and running in a satisfactory manner?

While you may not like hearing all the complaints, and perhaps your frustrated by either your inability to rectify the situation yourself, as you are more a liason to the guys that handle the network, or perhaps you just dont like us. biggrin.gif

Unfortunately as a forum moderator this is the position you have placed yourself in. For this issue you are the only one we know to look for answers. If you place some contact information for "the powers that be" we will gladly motivate them.
I know that it wouldn't help anything if they got flooded with calls an emails since you guys are understaffed as you had mentioned before and this would only take more time out of their days.

Even if the answer was that our problems are not likely to be solved this semester, or any semester in the near future we would stop asking so often.(those that read the forum regularly anyway) That, or we could try going other routes such as working with USG or BSC administration and tell them what our needs and expectations are. The students are the ones paying the big bucks to be here.
Residence Life IT
I will continue to forward your concerns to the people that can actually do something about this. I want to get it working properly for you. However, we are aware of your concerns and of the problem so repeatedly bringing it to my attention here is not helping.
John
sorry, im just bitter with the network,
not you,
my boss says were gonna miss you,
Im the new guy at the Computing help desk,
the parking is just to boot.

I was wondering when online games like World of Warcraft and the Matrix Online are going to be allowed. I have the Matrix Online and it works but it lags like crazy! I was just curious if these games will be allowed in the future..
Nakrah
World of Warcraft works, although you will find yourself with latency in the 1000-5000MS range between 6pm-11pm from my expirience. Any other time you may find "acceptable" ping of 500ms-1000ms.

MMO's I know that Do not work as far as I can tell.

FFXI
Dungeons and Dragons Online (Beta)
Dark Ages of Camelot

Programs that do not function:

Teamspeak 2 RC2 (randomly connects ping in the 5000-30,000ms range)
Ventrilo (Randomly connects, high ping not enough bandwidth for full voice streaming)

And as it is going to be posted (or you can see if you feel like reading through the previous 8 pages and a similar post on this board)

These games/programs that are not working is not due to a port assignment issue, or any other feature being blocked. All network traffic going off campus is sent through a bandwidth equalizer (Packetshaper) which assigns bandwidth to indiviual programs based on what they are recognized as.

Unrecognized packets are given minimal bandwidth. This issue will be resolved with either A.) A new rule set for packetshaper B.) A new packetshaper that has been ordered but not yet arrived/installed.

There is no set date for these issue to be fixed as far as I know but we will all be notified by Residence Life IT as soon as anything changes.
buffstatecis2006
Yeah, the packetshaper has rules that were set by Computing Services. As they have allocated resnet at a throughput of 10mbps, the rules have to be on otherwise it would pretty much bring down the resnet segment. I think the throughput is 10mbps because last time i noticed a couple of semesters ago, the wall jack was loose and I saw the ethernet cable in. On the cable in the wall it said CAT3 cable. This by fact has a maximum throughput capacity of 10mbps. Wiring an entire campus is extremely costly and isnt a quick job. So even if they get the new packetshaper, don't expect it to be much higher speeds due to the infrastructure unless they update the wiring to CAT5/e. Even with the new packetshaper, it may be able to handle and process requests better but if the wiring isnt up to date, there's still going to be slowdowns.

What they can do is set rules that would increase priority to unknown traffic during the night hours (10pm - 6am for example) during the week (M-F), then weekends they could increase the priority as a lot of students "go home" on the weekends which frees bandwidth on the network's allocation in resnet.

But as long as streaming audio, browsing the web, starcraft, diablo 2, and yahoo works to an extent, its not that bad. I could handle it for just a couple of months more then I graduate.
Residence Life IT
Cabling to some of the rooms is 10MB but the backbone is faster. We are actually bumping up the ResNet bandwidth substantially soon, too. Things will improve!
cobbs87
awesome. good news.
