My son was just accepted for Fall 2007 admission. We would like to send in the Residence Life registration as soon as possible to assure a spot on campus. Which freshman dorms should be his first and second choice? Is Perry or Neuman considered to be the better one, and why? We have not had a chance to visit the campus yet, so would appreciate any input we could get.

Both residence halls are nice, and have had some recent repairs and refurbishing. We will get your message forwarded to Residence Life, though, for further follow-up.

I'm living on campus right now and I must say that Porter Hall is clearly NOT the best, unless your son likes to party and get woken up at four A.M. nearly every night by fire alarms. I spent the night in Perry Hall and I could not sleep because everything can be heard through the walls - they are very thin. While I have never spent any real amount of time in Neumann Hall, it seems to be the best for Freshmen. However, I really encourage a visit to the campus before enrolling... I made the mistake of not visiting Buffalo State College before I enrolled... and boy am I sorry. I cannot stand the school. It's very ugly and not very clean. The dorms don't even have a fresh coat of paint. They could do a lot more for the dorms. I realize Buffalo State is a college and there's only so much they can do, but how hard would it be to fix the fire alarms or put on a new coat of paint? So, I highly encourage you and your son to visit the campus before enrolling. Best of luck. |

I came in as a transfer, but this is what I heard about the freshman dorms. Porter hall is known for parties and fire drills. Perry and Newman are set up the same so it depends on the people who live in them. As long as your son can balance his academic schedule and social life, he should be fine in either dorm.

Just curious, does anyone have dimensions of the freshman dorm rooms and what size the closets are? Thanks |

I'd say Perry, just because it's so close to the student union. I know when i'm freezing my ass off, and I'm walking past perry to the union, i'm wishing i lived in there.

Just curious, does anyone have dimensions of the freshman dorm rooms and what size the closets are? Neumann is very nice, from the time I've spent in there. It's not nearly as cruddy as Porter. Buff State doesn't have the greatest dorms though. Oh and, North Wing is very tiny. I spent my night of Orientation there... The rooms were really tiny, and dirty. The closets are a really decent size. I could fit my (standard size) bike in one, with the front wheel spun to the side. I don't have any dimensions for you though, sorry. |

For the Freshman dorms, Perry and Neumann would be your best choices because they are the quietest. If your looking for dead silence go to Neumann. Depending upon the floor in Perry (this semester) things get loud but not to the point UPD is called.. I should know I live in Perry.

to be honest, I don't really remember which dorm it was...if you stand outside of Moot Hall though with the door behind you, it was the one directly across...

I stay in Neumann right now, and it isnt soo bad. Its a bit on the quiet side, compared to the other dorms like Perry and Porter. Everything takes some getting used to, but it isnt soo bad. I like it

I would like to think every dorm had the parties, just depends on the kind of scale you are talking about...Porter is a decent dorm, if you dont mind the occasional fire drill...Perry isnt bad, its just like Neumann.
There are parties all the time in buffalo, so you need not worry. Theres always downtown if all else fails, theres an 18 n over club and all that.... |

There are parties in every dorm but from what I heard porter is much crazier, I don't really know. It all depends on the people who you hang around....

We have not had a chance to visit the campus yet, so would appreciate any input we could get. Honestly good to the dorms and visit them 1st before making a choice. I have had the pleasure of spending time in all three freshman dorms. I lived in Porter and Neuman and spend countless hours in perry. Here is the run down. Porter party days and night. Fire drills does happen alot, but we know the fire alarm works and that most freshman students can't cook. But Porter does have th biggest bathrooms and washers and dryer on every floor. And also the rooms in Porter looks alot bigger. This building is also located in the center o everything kind of not 2 far from the gym but close enought to rockwell for that early class. ya fast elevator. Lounge on every floor. Neuman- Quiet most of the time, thin walls, small really small bathrooms. Like 7 washers and dryers for the entire building only 3 floors but still not enough. No elevators. New Furniture atleast compare to Porter. RA and FYMs are crazy stricked. O ya and last but not least Spiders everywhere. Someone should call the exterminator. Lounge in the cold cold basement and it also have a tiny gym down there. 1 kitchen and 1 mircowave...:-( Perry is just like Neuman but on the other side of the campus, close to the student union the only good thing. No spiders in here atleast I didn't see any. Don't think too many parties happen here. But which every choice you pick i wish you the best of luck and if you was really lucky you would get into Northwing....But porter is sweet...... |

I'm going to say that Perry was the best place for a freshman to live at. Porter was always loud and Neumann was always dead because of the RAs there.. In perry we were quiet but we also had our loud moments. The RAs even joined in sometimes.. it might be different this semester I don't know. The only bad thing about the Residence Halls is that they have paper thin walls so you pretty much will hear almost everything your neighbors say in their room if they are talking real loud and they will hear you
