Our daughter just got accepted to Buff State in the Fashion and Textile Program and will start in the Fall 07 Semester. I'm already a nervous wreck about letting her leave "the nest" and I wondering how many other parents are in the same boat who might want to start a parent forum to discuss concerns, tips, info about classes, professors, computers, living arrangements, etc. etc.

I just think that the more I can talk to other parents the better prepared I will be to let our daughter go and know we've done everything possible to help her be successful at Buff State.

Let me know if you are interested! sad.gif sad.gif

Hi, i'm not a parent, i'm a student. I just got accepted for fall 07 as well and im excited and terrified at the same time.

I would also like to hear about any advice, concerns or information that may be useful in preparing myself for this challenge.

Nice to know my parents aren't the only ones.... smile.gif

Hello parents and new students!

I am the moderator of the "for parents" section of this Bulletin Board. I love the idea belle158 suggested to have other parents contribute to a discussion around sending a child off to college. There are many resources for parents and of course new students here at Buffalo State, but it always helps to have parents talk to other parents about their experiences.

I work with the Orientation office, so I know first-hand all that is being planned for your summer Orientation opportunities. You will find that once you attend summer orientation, many of your questions will be answered and many of your fears will be allayed.

We are in the process of creating a website for parents. It is temporarily housed at: http://www.buffalostate.edu/deanofstudents/x510.xml but will soon move to the "accepted students" site. Stay tuned on this Bulletin Board for further announcements!

Hiya,
I am a parent attending college here at Buff State smile.gif single mommy(age 39) of 4 beautiful kids. As a mom I know your fears, I have teenage daughters who want to come with me on their days off of school. I too will be very nervous letting go cool.gif we wouldn't be mom's if we didn't worry. I can tell you that almost all the young students I have met are pretty polite and very helpful. I am sure your daughter will be just fine. Oh tell her to take Ms. Sokol for Chemistry, very good professor.(she really cares that her students understand the material) I am a transfer student in, but I am sure other students will be glad to let you know who the better professors are. I truly believe most professors are great as long as a student really tries hard~you know what I mean. But I have noticed alot of professors are pretty tough as far as attendance goes. Being a mother, I sometimes get called out of class for a sick child and some professors just don't find that as an excuse to miss class mad.gif kind of peeves me off, but their isn't much I can do about it.
Take a deep breathe, she will be fine and your just a phone call away.
Blessings to you both.

My daughter was also just recently accepted to the Fashion & Textile Program for the Fall of 07. She is not convinced she wants to go all the way to Buffalo (we live down state). We are waiting to hear from another SUNY school that also offers the 3-1 program. I have an older daughter who is a junior in college so this isn't a new experience for us. I'd love to be part of the group. I'm hoping that my daughter will be happy where ever she goes. She is just so STRESSED right now, grades, waiting to hear about acceptances, friends being catty... it's a lot of pressure.

I know what we did for my oldest daughter in terms of computers, etc. but this daughter is different and I'm interested in hearing about rooming/housing suggestions. blink.gif

Hi:
I am the father of a daughter in Buff State; she is my second and last child to go away to college.
If your child has confidence in herself, she will be fine. If she has that inner confidence, at this point you have done all that you can do. You helped her through 12 years of school, helped her with the admission process and she has been successful and on her way to adulthood. I bet that she will be fine. Also, let her do things at college. It is very tempting to solve problems with professors, choosing classes, etc. Dont do it; give advice but encourage her to become the adult and handle her problems and issues. Have fun picking our all of the stuff that she will need in college.
YOU, on the other hand, seem to be stressed. smile.gif That is normal!! But don't let it get the best of you. Remember that she is going off to a new and exciting experience. She is leaving the nest but be assured that she will [I assume, in your case] be returning. Breaks in the semester can come quickly. The winter break just passed was for about 5 weeks- -a long time and they can be anxious to get back. . .and with time you will be anxious for her to go back. Yes, you will.
It is a new time of life for you. You don't say if you have any other children at home. When my second daughter left for Buff at the start of her first semester, my wife was sure it would be very difficult. Surprise, the freedom can be invigorating. We think about her everyday- -and cel phones are everywhere- -but we are in a different stage of life, and it is nice. Embrace the change, dont fret [too much] and you will enjoy the experience of your child going to school.

Thanks for the words of encouragement....yes, I'm a nervous nelly....maybe it's because she's our first (we have a 15 yo son with special needs so that will be another biggie for us in 2 years to let him go) to go to college. But I've heard from alot of friends and new contacts who all say the same thing; we've prepared them for this for 18 years and now we have to let go and let them fly. I think it sounds good, but I'll still be worried about her....sometimes she acts like she has a mature head on her shoulders but most times she still acts pretty irresponsible, especially about money. I'm hoping that once she gets to school (and hopefully gets transferred to the Wegman's that's about a mile from campus) that she'll start thinking more about her expenditures than she is now. We'll see I guess. thanks for your support and good luck with your family too!
Kind Regards, Lynn blink.gif

Hi Fellow Parents,

My daughter is a transfer student. She did her first two years here in NYC, so she was near by. Now with her being 6-7 hour drive away all the fears are in full effect....lol.

First I would like to know if there is anyone else who lives here in NYC, I am in the Bronx. I ask because I am interested in finding out ideas on moving her up there and storage info during breaks.

She is 22 and has some plans on having her friends take her up.....dont think that will happen cool.gif .

Also, I would like to maybe find travel compaions for her and or me when going up to see her or when she is coming back to the city. But I would just like to get involved with any parent groups and be informed.

I look forward to talking to you fellow parents and maybe meeting up.

Catch you guys later.

Linda
