Hi I have a question for any of you people that could possibly provide me with an answer... My friend is homeless now because she thought she would get a room assignment but so far has not. What is Buffalo State's position on a HOMELESS STUDENT? She is good enough to pay tuition but not live there, although she has no where else to go? This has got to be one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard coming from this institution (and i use the term "Institution" lightly). Anyway, what can, can't, and should be done about this? I honestly would like to hear the input of fellow students, especially those who pay the college the exorbitent fees that come with the priviledge of living on campus.
Note: I am more than willing to contact the media for their assistance. |

If you friend falls under this category contact the residence life office today. Your friend should try calling the residence life office. If they know her situation, they can probably find her a place (even if they have to make a triple). |

I am in the same boat as your friend. I live in Syracuse and have yet to be assigned to a room. I would recommend waiting until closer to the move in date to start harassing the residence life office. I heard that they have put people up in a local hotel until rooms became available in past years. People still have time to decide to live elsewhere, so there is still a good possibility of getting a room assignment. I wouldn't really start worrying about it too much until a little closer to the beginning of classes. It isn't a personal thing, so I wouldn't get too bent out of shape. It's based on when you put in your residence license and all that paperwork stuff. I sent my stuff in later than most, so I can understand why I am waiting for a room assignment.
I would just find out when the latest room assignments will be sent before the move-in date. And ask what will happen in case that rooms don't open up. |

You and your friend obviously are not old enough to be attending college. Why is that? Because someone young is having a hard time living by herself? Unlike a vast amount of students who live on campus, my friend and a minority of others have serious problems that they cannot have any help from their parents about. So, before you jump to conclusions and decide to judge someone based on their socio-economic status, maturity, or whatever category you see fit, see how it feels to be in someone elses shoes. I think you would find it humbling. |

I think you would find it humbling. I think you should realize that you are not alone and that no one is able to look at their room assignments at the moment. You are not special in that you arn't sure of your room assignment and are worried about where you are staying. It's offensive that you make a dramatic post about Buffalo state being associated with causing homelessness when there is no threat whatsoever. Once again you are not unique in not having a room assignment and the media would laugh at you if you asked them to do a story on computer server problems and late room assignments. |

It's offensive that you make a dramatic post about Buffalo state being associated with causing homelessness when there is no threat whatsoever. I'd also like to point out that it can be offensive to tell another person that they're not old enough for college, due to their posting style. So, to quell the looming flame war, I'd like to cheerfully tell you both to step back for a moment, and take a deep breath. ok? ok. So: Grady: As people in this thread have noted, the Residence Life server is apparently having some issues at this time. I also know that there is a large incoming on-campus population, which could be the cause for some of these delays. I would certainly recommend that you contact Residence Life. You can find their information at: http://www.buffalostate.edu/residencelife/x505.xml as well as throughout the Buffalo State College Web site. If you have a problem with a specific office or department on campus, you should always try to contact them first. Their contact information can be found in many places and, if you can't find, I would recommend using the search feature as well. Generally, I believe the faculty and staff on campus do want to help, once they know there is a problem. |

Woah woah woah.
Everyone's entitled to their own opinions. Grady just feels very strongly on his beliefs. If your friend is not allowed to reside on campus then that's one thing, especially if she meets the requirements. But as Karebear (Karen) said earlier, if it was just that there hadn't been a room assigned yet, she can probably check now. I'm sure Buffalo State would never turn down someone's cash, even if they get a triple. I would too use the word "institution" lightly. Nest time think a bit before you go yelling at people for things like that- and yes I thought about yelling at you before i did and I don't really care what your situation is- i would have found your response rude no matter who you are. ONE MORE THING- where do you get off thinking that everything is about a "socio-economic" status? I am poor as an entity of my self. The only way I'm going to make it through college is via scholarships and loans. And I think you should walk in other peopl'es shoes to find out why they think the way they think before you go yelling at them "The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not." -Thomas Jefferson

A lot of college students have low socio-econmic status and difficult situations. This has nothing to do with the housing process. The housing process is based on when you apply for housing and the preference you selected on your form.
Every student who is registered full time and lives outside the 30 mile radius is guaranteed housing. So some people need to chill. From what I heard there are about 2,000 students that need housing so it might take some time to get everyone organized into a room. |
