Almost every site I look has rated BSC as one of the most dangerous schools in the WHOLE COUNTRY. I just wanted to know from students, why this is? Are the crimes caused by people in the neighborhood or the kids in the school? What are the crimes...rape, shooting, robbery, assault...? Is the neighborhoood a safe residential area or is it some kind of ghetto?

I'm not asking this cuz I'm scared, I'm not, I will be coming to this school this fall 2013 from NYC and It's bad to see that my school might have a bad reputation.

What is the school doing to make the campus safer? Has it gotten worst or better the last few semesters? Are students allowed to carry their own firearms in school to provide for their own protection?

Here are the articles where I got this information from:

Buff State tends to have a bad reputation on safety issues, but campus is not as bad as they make it seem. The side of campus that borders Grant St. is not the best area, but it the Elmwood side is a pretty nice neighborhood. The fact that we are the only SUNY city campus makes us more prone to crime just because there are more people around in general than say in a rural school like SUNY Potsdam. Our campus itself is very safe, it is when you step off of campus that worse incidents happen. On campus we have NYS Troopers 24/7 patrolling the campus, 52 saftely blue lights that will connect you to University Police in two seconds, walking escorts, an escort shuttle van, locked dorms 24/7, and employees who sit at the desk in the dorms from 4pm-4am watching the doors. We have so many safety measures, so it is really up to students to use them to keep themselves safe. Always walk with a friend, let someone know where you are, and be aware of your surroundings.

To get to know the campus safety measures and statistics better, check out the university police's website- http://police.buffalostate.edu/ . There is a section titled "How Safe is Campus?", which includes the most current safety report. According to that report, the types of crimes that occur in most frequent order are: drug violations, alcohol violations, robbery, assault, and sexual offenses. Also, that report shows a slight drop in crime from the past two years, especially in robbery charges. I know that this year, the worst incidents happened off campus, and in my opinion could have definitely been avoided. I am pretty sure firearms are definitely not allowed to be on campus, contact university police for more information about that (716-878-6333).

Despite what the ratings say, I believe Buffalo State is not much worse than any other campus. I have been here for 4 years and I have never felt unsafe on campus. The school does everything it can to support students in safety, even offers self-defense workshops. It is all up to each student to make the safest environment for themselves just by being smart and aware.

Hope that helps! If you have any more questions feel free to ask.

Thank you for answering me. I really appreciate it. Has the crime in the school gotten worst or better since those articles were written in 2012? Are the crimes commited by students in the school or the people in the neighborhood?

Crime is everywhere. In general Buffalo State College has it's own system for keeping it's students safe. If you follow the guidelines in the link above you shouldn't have very many problems, if any. As it is my 4th year, nothing has ever happened on campus to me.

Off campus for example: Grant street is not a place you want to be walking around alone at night. Just practice good safety measures when you go out at night (walk in groups, tell people where you are) and you should have no problems.

To specifically answer your question I would have to assume most of the crimes in Buffalo happen off campus.
