For those who keep up with research projects of faculty and staff this is old news, but for everyone else, beware...
http://www.bscsecondlife.info/ Thats right, BSC has its own second life island. I thought this was a joke at first; there was no way the Research Foundation would fund LAN parties or the MMORPG culture but apparently im wrong....lol-zorz. The funding is under the guise that now student will have a place to do reasearch and access to a second life librarian which would hopefully be better than an actual librarian. This is possibly the worst medium for anything productive. This entire situation is made even more hilarious with the fact that you cant even use second life on campus. The program is given such low priority by res-net that it wont run. And we have had 24/7 access for over a year now. “Ask Us 24/7” is an online reference service that connects users to professional librarians via a Web-based chat interface. I have never been so ashamed of my college, please discuss... |

Of all the things that could receive funding, this has to be one of the worst. What kind of message does this send? I'm thinking it's "instead of actually leaving your room to go to the library, just veg out in front of your computer". As per the pricing, here is a direct quote from Second Life website:
QUOTE Islands are priced at US$1,675 for 65,536 square meters (about 16 acres). Monthly land fees for maintenance are US$295. We offer a 50% discount to verified real world educators and academic institutions (e.g., universities/schools) or 501©3 non-profit organizations that will be using the regions to support their organization's official work. http://secondlife.com/community/land-islands.php |

As Residence Life has stated, additional lines are coming to campus: http://ask.buffalostate.edu/index.php?show...amp;#entry11151 I have heard this from several sources, so I believe that it's true. If you want more information about Buffalo State and Second Life, there is contact information at the bottom of their wiki, which you linked to: http://www.bscsecondlife.info/ |

Is there any ETA on when these new lines are being added to ResNet? I know Residence Life said at the end of this month, but it is very close to being the end of the month now. |

I do not have an exact date for those lines yet. I know the computing service is working on those. The lines are supposed to go live end of this month (estimated). I will post more information if I hear anything new.

Im all for this 2nd life stuff. Is the website not working or what? Update! We have a 50% success rate in actually logging in to second life on campus. And a 0% success rate of accessing the BSC Island. Also the wiki page doesnt seem to work after 5pm, I think they shut down the HIPEG sever its on. Anyone interested in this research project and/or free food, i would encourage to go to the Research fair thursday 11/08. Ill be there harrassing the librarians. This is project is only slightly better than the other Library project, Polish-American influence in western NY.....snore. |

Yeah .....
This school has enough problems, shouldn't they be trying to fix 1st Life issues before trying to make a virtual duplicate? |
