That's some incorrect information they have there. Most suites are six people (three bed rooms with two people each and a common room + bath). As a freshman it is doubtful that you'd end up in a suite, though it's not unheard of. But it is more likely that you would be in a corridor-style situation which is where most freshmen are placed (such as Porter, Perry, and Newmann).

im sure you can live without speedy Lost torrents, deg!

I'll have you know, Greg, that not only do I not like Lost, but I'm probably one of the only people on campus who actually acquire their media legally.

While the resnet experience has improved this semester, other computers around campus seem to be getting less bandwidth than before. I work at a computer lab on campus which got great internet speeds last semester, and this semester it's not as good.

It seems to me that the solution to the bandwidth problem would be to get more bandwidth. They probably just don't want to sink that kind of money down.

As a person who has tried to avoid the Union if at all possible, I must say that the new choices are a great improvement over what was available before. They could still improve some, especially in the area of service, but I think they're on the right track.

PacketShaper isn't new to the school's network, it's been around for at least a year now.

Angel alvays works fine for me with IE7 and Vista. It could be something specifically wrong with your computer. You should try disabling any tool bars or third party plugins in IE to see if that's the problem. Alternatively, you could try using Firefox.

I don't think this is the right forum for this, but I will try to help. Without know the entire system configuration, I couldn't really say for certain what the problem could be, but among many problems, the most common are the presence of some form of malware (viruses, trojans, spyware) or not enough memory. Do you have a recently updated virus scanner? If not, you should. There are many good free anti-virus programs available such as AVG. Secondly, how much memory do you have? If you have anything 256 MB or under, you should consider adding more memory. If you don't know of any local computer repair people, you should consider calling Microsoft for tech support. They are not the friendliest people to deal with, but it is their operating system and if anyone should know how to fix it, it should be them.

Personally, I find it more expensive to buy food on campus and easier/cheeper to just go to Tops or Wegmans. If you don't get a meal plan and you decide that you want to eat in the Union, you can always go to Dining Services and add money to your card (to take advantage of the tax free benefit of being a student), so I wouldn't get a plan just so you can "try before you buy".

As far as I know, there aren't any buildings specifically dedicated to graduate students. I would say that most graduate students probably get placed in Moore Complex, but there's only so many spots and housing is really tight on campus. Moore Complex is the most expensive of the living options on campus and for a graduate student it might just be better to find an off-campus appartment close by. You can usually find roommates to keep costs down.

Is there any reason that CFTO (CTV, ch 9) and CHCH (ch 11) are still not available? I was hoping to watch a few Canadian shows that you can't get on US stations.

QUOTE (paulk @ Oct 23 2007, 05:28 PM) *
As Residence Life has stated, additional lines are coming to campus:
http://ask.buffalostate.edu/index.php?show...amp;#entry11151

I have heard this from several sources, so I believe that it's true.

Is there any ETA on when these new lines are being added to ResNet? I know Residence Life said at the end of this month, but it is very close to being the end of the month now.

Not that many college students care, but downloading music from file sharing services is illegal. There are many cheap, legal ways to download music that do work on campus, including, but not limited to, iTunes, Napster, Rhapsody, and the new Amazon MP3 store.

While I can't necesarily comment on Sodexho's food safety practices, as I've never really observed them, I do believe that their prices don't relate to the products or the service level offered by many of their employees. While minimum wage (or near minimum wage) doesn't exactly motivate a person to perform at their best, I was a manager at McDonald's for nearly three years and I wouldn't have tolerated the blatent lack of enthusiasm or any semblance of "customer service". Many (but not all) of their employees are rude and unenthused. No matter how new and modern your facilities look, your business (and yes, food service on campus is a business) is only as good as the employees you hire to represent it.

I really try not to eat on campus, but only because it's way to expensive. I'm on a really tight budget and shopping for my own food is more economical.

Of all the things that could receive funding, this has to be one of the worst. What kind of message does this send? I'm thinking it's "instead of actually leaving your room to go to the library, just veg out in front of your computer". As per the pricing, here is a direct quote from Second Life website:

QUOTE
Islands are priced at US$1,675 for 65,536 square meters (about 16 acres). Monthly land fees for maintenance are US$295.

We offer a 50% discount to verified real world educators and academic institutions (e.g., universities/schools) or 501©3 non-profit organizations that will be using the regions to support their organization's official work.

That would most likely be in Payroll, Cleveland 410.

I used to play SWG, but I could never get it to connect either. I searched all over the net for a solution too, but it never let me connect. I am, however, almost always able to connect to World of Warcraft, even when browsing web sites is really slow. It's odd.

No offense or anything, but this topic has been dead for a year, and plus a download accelerator only speeds up downloads, not web browsing or online games.

My point really was that more often than not, Buff State seems to get the shorter end of the stick, especially when compared to most other SUNY schools. It sucks that we pay the same standard SUNY tuition as most other SUNY schools, and yet we don't receive the same services (for example, having to pay for laundry where most other SUNY schools include it with your room & board). While there are other schools who have internet access just as bad or worse than us, generally, colleges are known for their fast internet connections.

There's really nothing you can do about it. The internet bandwidth problem is just like every other problem at this school, like how there are paying residents living in hotels. Honestly, other than Buff State, I've never heard of a college with a slow internet connection.

Last semester I was able to play WoW with few problems. I don't play anymore so I couldn't tell you what it's like now. If you are using Windows XP with SP2 or Windows Vista, you should check your Windows Firewall settings. Otherwise, like already said, the bandwidth allotted for basically anything except for buffalostate.edu can be pretty terrible especially if everyone is using bandwidth intense web sites or programs all at once.

I also don't remember hearing the recorded voice repeating something like "This is an emergency, please exit the building". I really think the standard fire alarm is enough!

How about that 2:30 am fire alarm we had last night? At least my first class is at 1pm.
